Show 17. BUCK TOLD ME SOMETHING THAT DAVIES NEVER SAID; NAMELY THAT IF DAVIES WAS SUCCESSFUL IN RETURNING TO STANDARD, HE WOULD EXPECT TO HAVE ME WITH HIM. THIS WAS NOT TOO APPEALING TO ME, FOR I PRE-FERRED TO SEE US GO OUR SEPARATE WAYS. I ALSO SUSPECTED THAT MY PROSPECTS AT STANDARD MIGHT HAVE BEEN DIMMED BECAUSE OF THE HOSTILITY TOWARD DAVIES IN SOME QUARTERS AND MY CLOSE ASSOCIATION WITH HIM. I AM CONVINCED NOW THIS WAS A FALSE FEAR BUT IT SEEMED VERY REAL AT THE TIME. THE BEST OF MY CAREER IS YET TO COME BUT LET ME PURSE HERE TO DRAW SOME CONCLUSIONS THAT STEM FROM THE EXPERIENCES THUS FAR AND PARTICULARLY FROM MY TIME WITH GOLDEN STATE. NOT ONLY DID I GO WITH GOLDEN STATE BUT AT FRANK BUCK'S REQUEST I PERSUADED OTHERS TO JOIN ME, THE MOST DISTINGUISHED BEING MY CLOSE FRIEND AND EX ROOMMATE ERNIE ARBUCKLE. NONE OF US STAYED WITH GOLDEN STATE |
