Show 3. QUARTERS WORK IN TWO QUARTERS SO I COULD GRADUATE EARLY AND WORK IN THE CANNERIES IN SACRAMENTO PACKING ASPARAGUS. THE PLAN WAS TO RETURN TO STANFORD BUSINESS SCHOOL IN THE FALL BUT AFTER THREE MONTHS I DECIDED DEL MONTE WAS NOT FOR ME AND I ENROLLED IN THE BUSINESS SCHOOL IN SUMMER QUARTER. THIS WAS SOMETHING OF A PROBLEM SINCE ONLY SECOND-YEAR COURSES WERE GIVEN IN THE SUMMER SESSION, SO I TOOK A QUARTER OF SECOND-YEAR WORK BEFORE I HAD HAD THE FIRST. I EARNED MY MBA AT THE END OF MARCH 1938. AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT, I WAS THE FIRST ONE HIRED IN MY CLASS AND AT THE THEN TOP SALARY OF $150 A MONTH. THIS CAME TO PASS WHEN A NOTE WAS PASSED TO ME DURING MY LAST FINAL EXAM BEFORE CHRISTMAS VACATION NOTIFYING ME THAT THE EMPLOYMENT MANAGER OF STANDARD OIL OF CALIFORNIA WAS WAITING TO SEE ME. HE INVITED ME TO COME TO SAN FRANCISCO IN JANUARY FOR A SERIES OF INTERVIEWS, |
