OCR Text	Show 3. GENERALLY A VERY CLOSE CORRELATION BETWEEN GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT PER CAPITA AND ENERGY USE PER CAPITA. ENERGY IS AN ESSENTIAL INGREDIENT IN PRODUCTION AND IN ACHIEVING A PHYSICALLY HIGH STANDARD OF LIVING. JUST AS THE PER CAPITA USE OF ENERGY VARIES WIDELY BY COUNTRY, SO DOES THE PRODUCTION OF ENERGY VARY BY COUNTRY. MOST OF THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD ARE NOT SELF-SUFFICIENT IN ENERGY AND SOME HAVE VERY LITTLE ENERGY OF THEIR OWN. THEIR DEFICIENCY IN ENERGY MUST BE MADE UP FROM THOSE COUNTRIES THAT HAVE A SURPLUS. IN 1974 THE UNITED STATES WAS ABLE TO EXPORT 4% OF ITS DOMESTIC ENERGY PRODUCTION BUT HAD TO IMPORT 13% OF ITS TOTAL ENERGY REQUIREMENTS. JAPAN IMPORTED NEARLY 89% OF ITS ENERGY NEEDS. THE UNITED KINGDOM IMPORTED A LITTLE OVER HALF OF ITS ENERGY IN 1974 BUT SHOULD SOON BECOME A NET EXPORTER OF
