Show of an atmosphere in which good people feel they can thrive. We in Utah believe that good people are attracted to companies that are on the move, that provide them with the opportunities for developing their talents and advancing as far as their talents will carry them, that will measure their individual performance objectively and accurately, and reward it appropriately. They want to be treated fairly, decently, and to have their voices heard. They want to be able to have room to move and to breathe and to know that their efforts have resulted in measurable progress both for themselves and for the enterprise they serve. They will be driven away from a management that frustrates them in these ambitions and they will be attracted to and serve well a management that makes these things possible. To create the kind of an atmosphere that we felt was desirable we did these things: First, over time we developed a relationship between the management and the Board that gave each confidence in the other. We keep our Board informed to an extent far beyond that of any other company with which I am familiar with the possible exception of Industrial Indemnity. While our Board meets only quarterly the meeting takes all day, interrupted by a luncheon where the Board dines with members of management with the guest list of management people being rotated each time and reaching well below the officer level. After the Board meeting there is a dinner for the Directors and their wives and at least twice yearly they are joined by members of management and their wives.
