THIS IN AND OF ITSELF IS NOT FATAL BUT I AM ALSO A COMPULSIVE JOINER, A SOFT TOUCH FOR ALL SORTS OF WORTHY CAUSES, MOST OF WHICH INTEREST MY FRIENDLY SOLICITORS MORE THAN THEY DO ME, PUT THESE TWO WEAKNESSES TOGETHER AND THE RESULT IS AN EX-ENGLISH MAJOR READING SOME OF THE MOST MORTAL LITERATURE WRITTEN BY MAN. ONE OF THESE WAS AN ANNUAL REPORT FROM AN INTERNATIONAL PHILANTHROPIC ORGANIZATION - SIX PRINTED PAGES IN ALL - THAT CONTAINED THIS THOUGHT-PROVOKING SENTENCE, AND I QUOTE: "THE BIRTH OF THE BABY GORILLAS WAS, OF COURSE, THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENT OF 1973." (CLOSE QUOTE) I WAS WILLING TO ACCEPT THE REPORT'S CONCLUSION THAT THIS EVENT DID SURPASS THE DISCOVERY THAT THE DROPPINGS OF THE CAPE BARREN GOOSE WERE MUCH MALIGNED AS MANURE AND REALLY NOT AS DAMAGING TO |
