Show 9. 85% interest in this $169. 3 million project with an estimated annual output of 4 to 5 million tons of coal having a higher quality than that from our other mines. We would be aiming at shipments before the end of 1975 and we are in the process of contacting potential customers in Europe and Japan. The reception has been encouraging in both markets. The facilities at Saraji will be so planned to serve an additional mine at Norwich Park which we hope to bring in at a later date. Productive capacity will be about the same and the two mines will share certain common facilities as do Goonyella and Peak Downs. Here the feasibility work is less advanced and the timing will depend upon the market and upon our ability to finance it without resorting to selling more equity in Utah International. Domestically the coal gasification study underway at Navajo with Pacific Lighting and Texas Eastern Transmission is scheduled for completion in July of this year. If the decision is made to go forward, an initial coal gasification plant utilizing the Lurgi process will be constructed which, starting in 1975 or 1976, will require 7 1/2 million tons of coal or more annually, depending on the BTU requirements. Utah would be the coal supplier and we have agreed to supply coal sufficient to fire four such plants for over twenty years. There is no certainty that this scheme will go forward but it offers an exciting potential. All of the studies of energy demand and supply point to a severe and growing shortage of natural gas and the necessity to utilize artificial gas despite the higher cost. If any two of these three projects materialize, Utah International should see the trend of increasing earnings continuing in the last half of the seventies. Fundamentally Utah's position remains strong. Our mineral sales backlog |
