Show 823.jpg -3- ESSAY IN THE SENIOR ENGLISH CLASS. I WAS EXCUSED FROM PRINT SHOP SO I COULD BE REHEARSED BY THE PUBLIC SPEAKING TEACHER. I WAS HER LAST ASSIGNMENT OF THE DAY, AND IT WAS NEVER CLEAR TO ME WHETHER HER WILLINGNESS TO DISMISS ME AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE WAS BECAUSE SHE DETESTED WORKING OVERTIME OR SIMPLY DESPAIRED OF MAKING "A SILK PURSE OUT OF A SOW'S EAR," TWENTY MINUTES AND WE WERE DONE. WHERE SHE WENT, I NEVER KNEW BUT I WENT EVERY AFTERNOON TO THE GOLF COURSE. I MAY NOT HAVE BEEN MUCH OF A VALEDICTORIAN BUT I ADVANCED FROM NUMBER FIVE TO NUMBER ONE ON THE GOLF TEAM! FOR THE NEXT 24 YEARS I REALLY HAD NO GREAT CALL TO SPEAK PUBLICLY. THEN IT CHANGED WITH A VENGENCE - I WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE SAN FRANCISCO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. IN THE NEXT TWELVE MONTHS I GAVE 56 SPEECHES. MY CIGARET CONSUMPTION WENT FROM ZERO TO TWO PACKS A DAY. SHEER TERROR WAS GRADUALLY DISPLACED BY TOLERABLE NERVOUSNESS AS FORCED EXPERIENCE MOVED ME ALONG THE LEARNING CURVE. |
