DATION WAS SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED IN SOME QUARTERS IN THE EARLY 1940'S, PARTLY OUT OF THIS SENSE OF DISSATISFACTION WAS BORN A NEW EFFORT TO UTILIZE MANAGEMENT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE IN BETTER AND MORE PROFITABLE PURSUITS. IT IS THE STORY OF THIS QUEST THAT WE TELL YOU TODAY. LET'S PICK UP THE STORY IN 1956 WHEN THE COMPANY HAD A MERE 257 SHAREHOLDERS, 2,400 EMPLOYEES, EARNED $4.2 MILLION, OR 16 A SHARE AND THE STOCK COULD HAVE BEEN PURCHASED OVER THE COUNTER AS LOW AS $1.18 THAT YEAR. THEN THE COMPANY DID LESS THAN $43 MILLION OF BUSINESS AND OVER 75% OF THIS WAS CONTRACT CONSTRUCTION. IT IS A VERY DIFFERENT ENTERPRISE TODAY. THE HEAVY CONSTRUCTION ASSETS WERE SOLD IN 1969 AND THE DREDGES IN 1971. TODAY THE PRINCIPAL ACTIVITY OF THE COMPANY IS MINING. IT PRODUCES COKING |
