THE PATTERNS OF ENERGY FLOW HAVE BEEN CHANGING AND ARE DESTINED TO CHANGE EVEN MORE. THESE ARE "BUSY" CHARTS BUT THEY ILLUSTRATE THE COMPLEXITY OF THE SUPPLY, DEMAND, AND FLOW OF ENERGY FROM THE SOURCE TO THE ULTIMATE USE. NOTE THAT OIL - AND DOMESTICALLY PRODUCED OIL AT THAT - WAS THE PRINCIPAL SOURCE OF ENERGY. COAL TRAILED BOTH OIL AND NATURAL GAS AS AN ENERGY SOURCE AND MUCH OF IT WAS USED TO PRODUCE ELECTRICITY. THE STARTLING FACT, THEN AS NOW, IS THAT IN CONVERTING HEAT TO ELECTRICITY WE LOSE ALMOST 2/3 OF OUR TOTAL CONCENTRATING FOR THE MOMENT UPON THE UNITED STATES THE CHART ON THE LEFT SHOWS THE SITUATION IN 1960. |
