Show 10. mining projects. Once the new mining project becomes operational, the interest paid is expensed as a cost of doing business along with an amortization charge that will write off the amounts that have been capitalized over the life of the mine. Hence we see that the total interest paid by the company has increased steadily and substantially as a result of our expansion program initiated in 1968. Total interest paid increased ten-fold in ten years. But the amount of these charges absorbed as an expense, shown in orange, declined from $5. 5 million in 1969 to $2.9 million in 1971 and then increased sharply to $16.1 in 1973 as the various units in the expansion program became operational.
