HERE AT STANFORD WE WERE ALL CONVINCED THAT WE WERE MAKING GREAT PROGRESS UNTIL HARVARD'S PRESIDENT DERCK BOK IN HIS POST-GAME INTERVIEW IMPLIED THAT STANFORD WASN'T GAINING - HARVARD WAS JUST FALLING BEHIND. THIS MAKES ME ALL THE MORE CONSCIOUS OF THE FACT THAT TONIGHT I SHOULDN'T APPEAR TO BE A POOR LOSER. I HAVE YET TO MEET RENE MCPHERSON. HE'S NOT EXACTLY A HOUSEHOLD WORD AMONG THE HOI POLLOI BUT AMONG CONNOISSEURS HE'S CONSIDERED MORE LIKE CHATEAU LAFITTE THAN COCA COLA. HIS GOOD REPUTATION PRECEDES HIM. I FIND HE PLEASES FRIENDS OF MINE WHO ARE HARD TO PLEASE RENE HAD EXPECTED TO BE HERE THIS EVENING AND, SINCE ALL MY IMPROMPTU REMARKS ARE CAREFULLY PREPARED IN ADVANCE AND ONCE I'M PROGRAMMED I'M HARD TO TURN OFF, I'M NOT GOING TO LET HIS ABSENCE CAUSE ME TO LEAVE UNSAID SOME THINGS THAT NEED SAYING IN THIS CRITICAL TIME IN THE HISTORY OF THE NATION AND THIS GREAT UNIVERSITY. |
