Show 5. negotiated two-year labor agreement with the coal miners in Australia we expect to be able to do so. Coking coal is the biggest contributor to Utah's profits and it will clearly become even more significant. In uranium we also have a production problem rather than a marketing problem, for our anticipated output is sold out through 197 5 at satisfactory prices. The temporary problems at Lucky Mc are behind us and there we anticipate no difficulty in meeting our goals. However the new mine and mill at Shirley Basin have been plagued with problems over the past year and only now does the solution appear near at hand. Unfortunately we have had to borrow and purchase some uranium to meet our combined sales commitments. At Navajo we can produce more steam coal than the utilities are taking. They and we anticipated that the five generating units now operating would require in excess of 8 million tons of coal annually, but the two newer 755 megawatt units have been down for repairs and maintenance much more than had been expected. Therefore in a normal year we are more likely to deliver 7 million tons and in 1972 the amount may be closer to 6. 359 million tons because the first three units have been shut down to install new wet scrubbing equipment to improve the removal of particulate matter from stack emissions. The new precipitation equipment cleaned up the air dramatically but it developed mechanical difficulties which are now being corrected. In copper Utah of course expects increased volume this year because Pima's capacity has been expanded and because the Island Copper mine and mill are now operating although they have not yet achieved designed capacity. At Island Copper we are still learning how to operate the world's largest autogenous mills which were designed to utilize 25% coarse ore and 75% fine ore. In the mine we have |
