ENTERTAINED THE BUSINESS BRASS OF THE BAY AREA, I HAD BEEN CALLED IN EARLIER BY DEAN JACOBSON, A SOMBER MAN, WHO NOTIFIED ME THAT I HAD BEEN SELECTED AS THE STUDENT SPEAKER ON A PROGRAM THAT INCLUDED AN ALUMNUS OF THE SCHOOL WHO HAD GRADUATED 10 YEARS BEFORE, AND, AS THE MAIN SPEAKER, A TOP AUTOMOBILE COMPANY EXECUTIVE, JACOBSON SAID: "YOU ARE TO SPEAK FOR 10 MINUTES. YOU ARE TO SPEAK ON THE FACULTY. YOU WILL BE FUNNY." THE ONLY SPEECH I HAD EVER GIVEN WAS AS HIGH SCHOOL VALEDICTORIAN AND FRANKLY I WAS TERRIFIED. I WAS SAVED BY THE FACT THAT, THEN AS NOW, IT'S NOT THAT HARD TO BE FUNNY ABOUT THE FACULTY! BUT I WANDER. BILL BATES WAS AN EXECUTIVE ACCIDENT. HE HAD BEEN RALPH DAVIES' SECRETARY AND RALPH TRIED TO MAKE HIM INTO AN ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT.
