Show 15. ONCE AGAIN, DAVIES INTERVENED WHEN TO MY SURPRISE LATE ONE EVENING HE ASKED ME WHAT I PLANNED TO DO AFTER THE WAR. I SAID THAT I HAD NO PLANS OTHER THAN RETURNING TO STANDARD. HE THEN WENT ON TO TELL ME THAT HE HAD SUGGESTED TO FRANK BUCK, HIS FRIEND AND NEIGHBOR AT TAHOE AND HEAD OF GOLDEN STATE, THAT I WAS A YOUNG MAN THAT MIGHT HELP HIM SOLVE SOME OF GOLDEN STATE'S PROBLEMS. GOLDEN STATE WAS THEN THE LARGEST DAIRY COMPANY IN CALIFORNIA AND INDEED ABOUT THE FIFTH LARGEST IN THE NATION. RALPH DAVIES WAS A SUBSTANTIAL SHAREHOLDER PERSONALLY AS WAS BUCK, AND STANDARD OF CALIFORNIA HAD ALSO BEEN PART OF A SYNDICATE THAT HAD BOUGHT CONTROL OF THE COMPANY IN 1938 BUT STANDARD NO LONGER RETAINED ITS STOCK. THROUGH THE GENIUS OF GROVER TURNBOW AS PRESIDENT, GOLDEN STATE HAD PROSPERED, PARTICULARLY DURING THE WAR AS THE COMPANY WAS A MAJOR PRODUCER OF DRIED MILK. MR. BUCK AND MR. TURNBOW HAD A PARTING OF THE WAYS. |
