Show 21. DECIDED TO SEE IF HE COULD HIRE ME. I WAS NOT PARTICULARLY ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT THE PROSPECT. I HAD TURNED DOWN AN OFFER FROM UTAH IN 1938 DESPITE THE FACT THAT MY MOTHER'S FAMILY WERE THE LARGEST SHAREHOLDERS. THE BUSINESS OF THE COMPANY WAS THEN LARGELY HEAVY ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION. THE COMPANY WAS BEING RUN BY THE SON OF ONE OF THE EARLY PRINCIPALS, AN ENGINEER WHO HAD SPENT HIS LIFE WITH THE COMPANY, SEVEN YEARS MY SENIOR, AND WHO HAD DEMONSTRATED SOME ENTREPRENEURIAL GENIUS. HE WAS EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER AND IN UTAH CONSTRUCTION WHOEVER WAS GENERAL MANAGER RAMRODDED THE SHOW. BECAUSE I WAS NOT EAGER FOR THE JOB I DARED TO LAY DOWN TWO PRECISE CONDITIONS. FIRST, I INSISTED THAT MY JOB BE PRECISELY DESCRIBED SO THAT EVERY ONE UNDERSTOOD WHAT I WAS TO DO, TO WHOM I WAS RESPONSIBLE AND WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE TO ME. THIS WAS A CONCEPT |
