I NEED NOT REVIEW THE SHADY SIDE OF JOURNALISM FOR THIS SOPHISTICATED AUDIENCE, BUT DETOCQUEVILLE SPOTTED THE PROBLEM EARLY WHEN HE WROTE, "THE HALLMARK OF THE AMERICAN JOURNALIST IS A DIRECT AND COARSE ATTACK - WHICH HAS NO WEIGHT WITH THE READERS - WHAT THEY LOOK FOR IN A NEWSPAPER IS KNOWLEDGE OF FACTS, AND IT IS ONLY BY ALTERING AND DISTORTING THOSE FACTS THAT THE JOURNALIST CAN GAIN SOME INFLUENCE FOR HIS VIEWS." IT WOULD BE HARD TO DENY THAT THIS PROBLEM OF SENSATIONALIZING AND DISTORTING TO GET ATTENTION IS WITH US STILL. PERHAPS IT'S INHERENT IN COMPETITIVE JOURNALISM AND A FREE PRESS.
