Show 4. through 1929 only $2.4 million. For many businesses the 30's were very lean years indeed but in Utah's case the situation was salvaged by its participation through the Six Companies in the building of the Hoover Dam. Among heavy construction men the Hoover Dam, or Boulder as they are wont to call it, still occupies a unique place in their esteem. From a physical and engineering standpoint it was a triumph of man over nature. From a financial standpoint it was very rewarding to the participants at a time when profits were hard to come by. But the completion of Hoover also marked a turning point in Utah's affairs. Two of Utah's founders -- W. H. Wattis and his brother and my grandfather, E. O. Wattis -- had served respectively as the first and the third Presidents of the Six Companies and both died before the job was completed. At the same time the other senior construction officer of Utah who had combined forces with the company in its very early days, A. H. Christensen, also died. They were elderly men and had committed a sin common to construction men of failing to develop adequate leadership to succeed them. Leadership of the heavy construction industry passed to younger and more vigorous hands. Utah's progress was further deterred by dissention in the stockholder ranks which left control of the company in delicate balance and made management necessarily less venturesome than might otherwise have been the case. So discouraged were some of the important shareholders of the company that dissolution of the company was seriously considered in the early 40's. The last decade of the first 50 years was a period of recovery in earning power, resulting in part from war-time profits when construction services were in great demand and later by sustained construction profits in the immediate post-war years when construction demand continued high. These were the recovery years and in this decade Utah earned $8. 8 million. Perhaps more |
