Show GENTLEMEN: At the outset let me thank you for the invitation to appear before you this evening. I am delighted to be with you and to experience the warm Texas hospitality renowned the world over. I realize from my tour of the City earlier today that the name "Littlefield" is not completely unknown in Austin or even in Texas. Some years ago the President of the Chamber of Commerce of Littlefield, Texas innundated me with literature about his city and urged me to relocate the company and my family there. This was a riskless adventure on his part since at that time I was serving a stint as President of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. Much as I would like to, I cannot claim close kinship to the Texas Littlefields, for I am a descendant of another branch of the family that went "thataway" and ended up farther west. I wouldn't want to leave you with the impression that my branch of the family has gone completely unrecognized insofar as lending their name to real estate. We cannot claim Littlefield, Arizona, but that is so small it isn't on most maps. But there is a street in the town of Blackwater, (population 2000) in the State of Queensland, Australia named after me. The decision to do so may have been influenced by the fact that it is located in a company housing project supporting our mine there and the decision was made by an enterprising mine manager seeking a short-cut to the top of the corporate ladder. He is back in San Francisco awaiting reassignment as head of our Siberian operation once the existing ban on East-West trade is lifted. |
