WITH HORSES YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THEIR TEETH, AND HERE YOU GO BY THE WEAR AND TEAR, NOT THE TARTAR. OVER A HUNDRED YEARS AGO A FRENCH DOCTOR FOUND A WAY TO TEST A WOMAN'S EYES AND TELL HER EXACT AGE MORE ACCURATELY THAN SHE WOULD STATE IT WITHOUT TRUTH SERUM. BUT IN MY CASE A SINGLE GLANCE, EVEN FROM THE UNTRAINED EYE, IS SUFFICIENT TO KNOW THAT I HAVE BEEN AROUND A CONSIDERABLE LENGTH OF TIME. LESS EASILY DETECTABLE IS THE FACT THAT IN THOSE THREE-SCORE-AND-FIVE YEARS IT HAS BEEN MY GOOD FORTUNE TO HAVE HAD A LIFE RICH IN VARIED EXPERIENCES. I HAVE DINED WITH KINGS, SHOT GROUSE WITH PRIME MINISTERS, DANCED AT THE WHITE HOUSE, STOOD ON THE GREAT WALL, BEEN SUED BY THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION, AND WALKED |
