It is also important to recognize that Marcona's Peruvian mining operation has been increasingly transformed from the relatively simple direct shipping operation that it was in the 1950's to the very complex beneficiating operation it is now. All of the iron ore is currently upgraded in quality from its natural state, both to raise the iron content and to rid the ore of the deleterious elements which affect steel production or air quality at the steel mills.
