IN 1951 I WAS SURPRISED TO RECEIVE A LONG DISTANCE CALL FROM MARRINER ECCLES, STILL CHAIRMAN OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE, SAYING HE WAS COMING TO THE ROSE BOWL GAME AND ASKING ME TO MAKE A FOURTH AT GOLF WITH HIS BROTHER GEORGE AND THE HEAD OF THE UNION PACIFIC. AFTER THE GOLF GAME HE DESCRIBED TO ME THE ACTIVITIES OF THE UTAH CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, WHICH WAS DOING BETTER ON SOME FRONTS.BUT THE DIRECTORS - VIRTUALLY ALL FROM THE LARGE SHAREHOLDING FAMILIES -WERE DISSATISFIED WITH THE QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF THE INFORMATION BEING RECEIVED FROM MANAGEMENT. THEY HAD AGREED THAT THE COMPANY NEEDED A FINANCIAL VICE PRESIDENT THAT THE BOARD COULD TRUST AND MY NAME HAD BEEN TOSSED INTO THE HOPPER BY ONE OF MY UNCLES AS AN EXAMPLE OF THE TYPE THE COMPANY NEEDED BUT WITH THE COMMENT I WAS UNAVAILABLE.
