Show 11/1/79 STANFORD ADVISORY COUNCIL DINNER THANK YOU. GOOD EVENING, FELLOW MEMBERS OF THE ADVISORY COUNCIL. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THAT I HAVE BEEN ASKED TO ADDRESS A GROUP OF BUSINESS PEOPLE DEEMED FRIENDLY TO STANFORD'S GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS. THE VERY FIRST INVITATION WAS IN 1937 DURING MY FIRST YEAR AS A STUDENT AT THE SCHOOL. DEAN JACKSON SUMMONED ME TO HIS OFFICE AND EXPLAINED THE SCHOOL HOSTED EACH YEAR A DINNER FOR LEADING BUSINESSMEN AND ALUMNI. THE PROGRAM CALLED FOR THREE SPEAKERS -A STUDENT FROM THE SCHOOL, AN ALUMNUS THAT HAD BEEN GRADUATED 10 YEARS EARLIER, AND, AS THE PRINCIPAL SPEAKER, A PROMINENT BUSINESSMAN. DEAN JACKSON'S INSTRUCTIONS WERE PRECISE AND EXPLICIT. WITH ALL THE FRIVOLITY FOUND IN AN AUDITOR'S CERTIFICATE, HE SAID: "YOU HAVE BEEN CHOSEN TO BE THE STUDENT SPEAKER. YOU WILL SPEAK FOR 10 MINUTES. YOU WILL SPEAK ABOUT THE FACULTY. YOU WILL BE FUNNY." BEING FUNNY ABOUT THE FACULTY WAS NO HARDER THEN THAN NOW. I |
