Show 10. ME SIT AT HIS TABLE WITH THE RALPH DAVIES. I MANAGED TO GET THROUGH THE DINNER BY BEING ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE TABLE FROM RALPH, THOUGH NEXT TO HIS WIFE. THIS WAS NO PROBLEM BECAUSE SHE DID ALL THE TALKING. BUT AFTER DINNER RALPH ZEROED IN ON ME AND THERE WAS NO ESCAPE. HE WAS A HANDSOME, FORMAL MAN WITH EYES THAT WERE USUALLY COLD STEEL BUT ON RARE AND WONDERFUL OCCASIONS COULD TWINKLE AND MELT YOU WITH THEIR WARMTH. THE STILTED DIALOGUE WENT LIKE THIS: "MR. LITTLEFIELD, DIDN'T YOU SPEAK HERE LAST YEAR?" "YES, MR. DAVIS, I DID" "I ENJOYED YOUR REMARKS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW?" "I'M WORKING." "WHERE?" "IN SAN FRANCOSCO." "FOR WHAT COMPANY?" "FOR STANDARD OIL OF CALIFORNIA." "OH. I'M DELIGHTED TO HEAR IT. IN WHAT OFFICE?" "IN YOURS, MR. DAVIES." "WELL, WELL. IMAGINE HAVING TO COME DOWN HERE TO MEET A NEXT-DOOR NEIGHBOR." I FLED INTO THE NIGHT. |
