OCR Text	Show 20. were plagued by labor stoppages common to other companies operating in Peru. 1971 also was distinguished by huge profits from shipping activities as Marcona took skillful advantage of the wide and rapid swings in ocean charter rates, chartering out its vessels to the oil trade when rates were high and later chartering in its dry cargo needs as rates fell. These conditions were not present in 1972 and shipping profits declined to more normal levels. Fortunately industrial conditions in Peru improved and mining activities were again profitable. As earlier noted, the 1972 contribution to income from our affiliated companies fell but was still the second highest amount ever. (Slide 9 - on)
