ANYWAY, I REASONED THAT THE STANFORD BUSINESS SCHOOL HAD HAD ABOUT ALL THE TRAINEES FROM FORD THAT ITS FUTURE COULD TOLERATE, WHAT I DID NOT KNOW WAS THAT THE SEARCH COMMITTEE HAD REWRITTEN THE DEAN'S JOB DESCRIPTION AND PAST WAS NO LONGER PROLOGUE. NOW THAT THE NEWS OF THE NEW DEAN IS OUT, I HAVE HAD TO TEAR UP MY ACCEPTANCE SPEECH. I CAN ONLY SAY THAT I UNDERSTAND HOW ADLAI STEVENSON FELT ON THE NIGHT OF THE LOSING ELECTION WHEN HE SAID HE "FELT LIKE THE LITTLE BOY THAT STUBBED HIS TOE IN THE DARK. 'TOO OLD TO CRY BUT IT HURTS TOO MUCH TO LAUGH". HIDING MY DISAPPOINTMENT I WENT BACK TO BOB SIMON FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT THE SUBJECT OF MY TALK. HE SEEMED SURPRISED AND INDICATED THAT THERE WERE ONLY TWO SUBJECTS THAT HAD OCCURRED TO HIM OR TO BALDWIN ON WHICH I WAS QUALIFIED TO SPEAK. I SHALL ADDRESS EACH |
