THE STANFORD CAMPUS WAS AN EXCITING AND CHALLENGING PLACE IN THE 25 YEARS FOLLOWING WORLD WAR II. WALLY STERLING, ABLY ASSISTED BY PEOPLE LIKE DICK LYMAN AND ALF, DROVE THE UNIVERSITY TOWARD GREATNESS, DEDICATED TO EXCELLENCE, AND CONVINCED THAT EXCELLENCE BEGETS EXCELLENCE, A SELF-BREEDING REACTOR IN THE EDUCATIONAL FIELD. IT WAS EASIER FOR DICK LYMAN TO WORK AT STANFORD THAN IT WAS FOR ALF. DICK WAS A MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING OF THE SELF-ANNOINTED CHOSEN PEOPLE - THE FACULTY. ALF WAS NOT. IT WAS A BIT LIKE BEING A GENTILE IN BRIGHAM CITY, UTAH. BEFORE ANYTHING COULD BE ACCOMPLISHED IT HAD TO BE CLEARED WITH COMMITTEES OF THE FACULTY AND THEN WITH COMMITTEES OF THE TRUSTEES, AND NONE OF THE MEMBERS OF |
