IN SEEKING THE CAUSES THAT THREATEN THE FLOW OF DIRECT INVESTMENT TO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES IT IS HELPFUL TO DO SO AGAINST THE BACKDROP OF HISTORY. FOR CENTURES AND UNTIL RELATIVELY RECENTLY SUCH INVESTMENT FLOWED WITHIN AN ESTABLISHED ORDER OR SYSTEM AND THAT SYSTEM WAS "COLONIALISM" WHERE TRADE FOLLOWED THE FLAG. THE MOTHER COUNTRY CAME INTO CONTROL OF ITS COLONIES SOMETIMES BY THE USE OF FORCE, SOMETIMES BY THE THREAT OF FORCE, SOMETIMES BY OVER-WHELMING WITH SETTLERS THE INDIGENOUS NATIVE POPULATION.
