CASE IT WOULD BE CHEAPER FOR THE UNIVERSITY TO GET RID OF A TRUSTEE BY HIRING A DEAN, BOB WAS, HOWEVER, OUTSIDE LEGAL COUNSEL TO THE UNIVERSITY AND AS AMICUS CURIAE HE FILED A BRIEF OPPOSING ERNIE'S APPOINTMENT. IN SUPPORT OF HIS POSITION HE MADE THE FOLLOWING POINTS: HOW COULD ONE EXPLAIN TO THE STUDENTS THE FACT THAT ERNIE GRADUATED FROM STANFORD IN 1933, NEVER LEFT SCHOOL, BUT DIDN'T GET HIS MBA UNTIL 1936, OR, HAVING GOTTEN HIS MBA IN 1936 WITH THE EMPLOYMENT MARKET ON THE UPBEAT, GOT HIS FIRST POST-GRADUATE JOB IN 1938? STANFORD HAD A REMARKABLE TRACK COACH IN "DINK" TEMPLETON. ERNIE WAS THE JUNIOR MANAGER OF THE TRACK TEAM AND NEAR THE END OF HIS JUNIOR YEAR WAS SHAGGING JAVELINS FOR THE TEAM'S JAVELIN THROWERS. HE WEIGHED LESS THAN 150 POUNDS BUT WAS THROWING THEM BACK ALMOST AS FAR AS THE TEAM WAS THROWING THEM OUT. DINK MARCHED ACROSS THE FIELD, ORDERED THE MANAGER INTO A TRACK SUIT, AND IN HIS SENIOR YEAR ERNIE WON HIS LETTER. THE STORY IS GIVEN AS AN EXAMPLE OF TEMPLETON'S UNIQUE |
