Show 21. BE CURED AS WEST GERMANY, JAPAN, EVEN AUSTRALIA ARE DEMONSTRATING. INFLATION IN THE UNITED STATES WILL NOT BE CURED QUICKLY OR EASILY BUT WE HAD BEST GET STARTED. TO CURE INFLATION WE NEED TO HAVE A CONSENSUS ON THE CAUSES, AND I WAS HEARTENED TO SEE IN A RECENT GALLUP POLL THAT THE PUBLIC IS BEGINNING TO REALIZE THAT GOVERNMENT IS THE PRIMARY CULPRIT. INFLATION IS CAUSED BY OR ACCOMMODATED BY A GROWTH IN THE MONEY SUPPLY AND CONTROL OF THE MONEY SUPPLY IS IN FEDERAL HANDS, THOUGH FINE TUNING IT IS NOT A SIMPLE PROBLEM. THE MONEY SUPPLY HAS BEEN INCREASING FASTER THAN THE SUPPLY OF GOODS, PARTLY TO FINANCE EXPENDITURES FOR LOW PRODUCTIVITY ENDEAVORS - THE VIETNAM WAR, MANDATED PRIVATE INVESTMENT TO MEET ENVIRONMENTAL AND OTHER GOVERNMENTAL REQUIREMENTS, AND OF COURSE THE HEAVY AND INCREASING COST OF GOVERNMENT ITSELF. MOUNTING FEDERAL DEFICITS YEAR AFTER YEAR HAVE PUT PRESSURE ON THE FEDERAL RESERVE TO FINANCE THEM. WITHOUT DEBATING HERE WHETHER THE LEGISLATION WAS RIGHT OR |
