Show 9. ABILITY FOR SIZING UP TALENT. SOME THINK DINK WANTED ANOTHER JAVELIN THROWER BUT THOSE OF US THAT KNEW BOTH ERNIE AND DINK WELL RECOGNIZE THAT WHAT DINK WAS REALLY AFTER WAS ONE LESS MANAGER. GIVING THE DEVIL HIS DUE, ONE CANNOT DENY THE FACT THAT POUND FOR POUND ERNIE WAS A REMARKABLE ATHLETE. HE WAS THE PITCHER AND I WAS THE CATCHER ON A SOFTBALL TEAM IN THE SAN FRANCISCO INDUSTRIAL LEAGUE. HE PITCHED A NO-HIT, NO-RUN GAME AND GOT ALL THE APPLAUSE. NO CREDIT WAS GIVEN TO THE THREE CAUSES THAT COMBINED TO MAKE THIS POSSIBLE: FIRST, AS THE CATCHER I WAS CALLING THE PITCHES AND FLASHING THE SIGNS, SECOND, THE OTHER TEAM HAD STOLEN OUR SIGNS AND WERE TIPPING OFF THE BATTERS. THIRD, THERE WAS NO RELATION BETWEEN THE PITCH I CALLED FOR AND THE PITCH THAT I GOT. ERNIE AND I STARTED OUR MILITARY CAREERS IN NAVAL INTELLIGENCE AND I QUICKLY LEARNED THAT THE NAVY HAD A CALLOUS DISREGARD FOR BOTH |
