BUT I HUMBLY SUGGEST THAT THE MEDIA WILL NOT SUCCESSFULLY DISCHARGE THE VITAL MISSION THAT IS THEIRS TO PERFORM UNLESS AND UNTIL THEY INFUSE THEIR RANKS WITH THOSE WHOSE EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND TEMPERAMENT TRULY QUALIFY THEM TO WRITE KNOWINGLY ABOUT THE SUBJECTS WITH WHICH THEY ARE DEALING. THEY MUST ALSO SEE TO IT THAT THEY ARE STAFFED WITH THOSE OF DIFFERING VIEWPOINTS IN ORDER TO PRODUCE BALANCED AND OBJECTIVE REPORTING AND EDITORIALS. "FREEDOM OF THE PRESS," SAYS MR. TYRMAND, "WAS AND IS THE JEWEL OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION, THE NOBLEST GUARDIAN OF THE NOBLEST CONCEPT OF DEMOCRACY." IF THAT IS SO - AND I THINK IT IS - THEN YOU MUST THINK NOBLY OF YOUR PROFESSION, AND HANDLE ITS RESPONSIBILITIES WITH CARE AND GRAVEST CONCERN. |
