WITH THIS IN MIND LET ME REVIEW BRIEFLY WITH YOU A FEW OF THE MORE SALIENT FACTS THAT BEAR UPON THE SUBJECT OF OUR DISCUSSION TODAY. THE CONSUMPTION OF ENERGY HAS GROWN AS THE POPULATION HAS INCREASED, AS NATIONS HAVE INDUSTRIALIZED, AND AS MAN HAS SUBSTITUTED ENERGY FOR HIS OWN LABOR, USING THE UNITED STATES AS AN EXAMPLE, WE SEE THAT OVER A CENTURY AGO FEED AND FODDER WAS THE PRINCIPAL FORM OF ENERGY. THEN COAL BECAME KING. MORE RECENTLY PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS HAVE BECOME THE PRINCIPAL SOURCES OF ENERGY. HOWEVER THE PER CAPITA USE OF ENERGY VARIES WIDELY |
