LITTLEFIELD BEFORE FINANCIAL EXECUTIVES INSTITUTE SAN FRANCISCO CHAPTER - JANUARY 14, 1970 GENTLEMEN: At the outset I would like to thank Mr. Walligore for the generosity of his introduction. Had it come from Drew Leonard I would have suspected that he was bucking for a bigger bonus next year but in these days of tight money and high interest rates Mr. Walligore must be above suspicion. I am particularly pleased to have the privilege of appearing before you this evening for, as a defrocked financial officer myself, I feel among friends here. Six of the companies on which I serve as a Director are represented among your membership, along with two former employers and at least one former employee. Tonight I would like to speak to you on "Managing an Enterprise the Utah Way" with the hope that from my remarks you may glean something that will be useful to you in conducting the affairs of the various enterprises that you represent. To put the problem in perspective for you and to help you understand better the changes that have taken place in Utah, I would like to dwell for a moment on the history of Utah. Let's begin at the beginning. The company was founded at the turn of the century by four Utah families with an initial capital of $24, 000. It started as a railroad builder and later diversified into other types of heavy construction activities. It enjoyed early success |
