Show credit for our share of two important affiliated companies, our backlog of mineral sales contracts has been built up from $80 million in 1961 to almost $2 billion today. 80% of the backlog is protected by long-term contracts with cost escalation provisions. The 5% growth rate that characterized the first half century has given way to a 14% growth rate for the past 20 years and 20. 5% for the past 5 years. Adding further luster to the picture is the announced fact that virtually every existing major profit center is being expanded. In addition, we are bringing in two new major mines - - a large coking coal property in Queensland and a new copper property in British Columbia. Not counting the capital being expended for expansion by our two important affiliates -- Marcona and Pima Mining -- Utah has committed itself to capital expenditures of $227 million, of which $44 million had been spent by the end of 1969. Considering that our net worth is only $130 million and our total assets $280 million, I am sure you will concede with me that this is an ambitious undertaking. We still cannot approach in size the larger of the United States mining companies but the gap is narrowing. We sell at the highest price-earnings ratio of the major mining companies, and I think that this is so for several reasons. First, the protection and assurance of future growth provided by the size of our backlog in relation to our existing operations. We have told our shareholders that we anticipate that our mining gross revenues will more than treble in -5- |
