Show minds have been ravaged by ill health, whose homes are broken, those whose lives are beset with problems beyond their capacity to solve without help. All this exists in the midst of a society that has attained the highest standard of living in history and enjoys the highest standard of living of any country in the world. The poor and the unfortunate have always been with us, but today there is less willingness to accept this as an inevitable and immutable fact. There are those of us who feel that the aspirations of these people are neither unreasonable not unattainable. They want decent food and shelter, security, justice, and opportunity to obtain and hold a decent job and a chance to live in dignity. - 6 - |
