Show 7. opening up of new mines. A review of our history suggests that the mines that we have brought into production have subsequently been expanded over the years. Marcona started production at the rate of 1 1/2 million tons of direct shipping ore annually and now ships some 10 million tons of beneficiated products. Pima started with a mill having a capacity of 1500 tons daily and it is now being enlarged to 52, 000 tons daily. Blackwater was originally sized to produce 2 1/2 million tons of coking coal, is now producing 3 million tons annually and is scheduled to go to 4 million tons. Navajo started producing at less than 1 million tons and now will be producing approximately 8 million tons of steam coal annually. Goldsworthy produced less than 3 million tons in its first full year of operation and is now aiming at 8 million tons. However, obviously existing mines can only be expanded so far, depending upon the size of the ore body, and we must look primarily to the opening up of new mines for big leaps forward in our earning power. New mines must grow out of mineral deposits already located or those yet to be discovered and developed out of an exploration program. Of those that we can talk about Utah has 5 publicly disclosed ore reserves that are capable of becoming mined when and if a market is obtained. Let me comment briefly on each of these. 1. Utah has a 50% interest in the Dayton iron ore deposit near Carson City, Nevada. But for this I see no prospect for development for some years. I do not think it will come into production before another integrated steel mill is built in the Pacific Coast area. |
