Show 23. the properties. Interest expense soared in 1972 from earlier levels because of the new mining properties that became operational. Conversely, the amount of interest capitalized fell during the year. The Provision For Income Taxes is another expense that rose sharply in 1972. (Slide 13 - on). As our gross profit and other income increased, so did our income taxes. The income tax rate itself accelerated as a larger share of income came from our own operations and from Australia which has no depletion allowance and a smaller share came from affiliated companies where taxes are provided for on our books at lower rates.
