IN 1932 I WAS ACCEPTED AS A FRESHMAN BY STANFORD UNIVERSITY AS AN ENGINEERING MAJOR, SWITCHED ON REGISTRATION DAY TO PRE-LEGAL AND AFTER TWO YEARS TO AN ENGLISH MAJOR. BEING AN ENGLISH MAJOR WAS NOT ALL BAD. IT SERVED AS A DEFENSE MECHANISM, A PROTECTIVE CAMOFLAGE. IF ONE OF THE SCIENTIFIC TYPES LIKE HEWLETT OR PACKARD WAS EXPOUNDING SCIENTIFIC THEORY BEYOND YOUR POWER TO COMPREHEND, YOU COULD ALWAYS CHANGE THE SUBJECT AND CONFOUND THEM WITH A QUESTION LIKE: "DO YOU THINK ERNEST DOWSON SHOULD BE CLASSED AS A MAJOR OR MINOR ROMANTIC POET?"
