THIS PARTICULAR NIGHT THERE WERE THREE PROBLEMS. FIRST, ERNIE HAD UNDER HIS COMMAND A SQUADRON OF LIGHTLY ARMED PT BOATS. SECOND, IT WAS A FOGGY, MOONLESS NIGHT, FORCING RELIANCE ON RADAR AND EARLIER INTELLIGENCE REPORTS WHICH TURNED OUT TO HAVE A SERIOUS FLAW AS TO THE NATURE OF THE ENEMY VESSELS WHICH WERE OPERATING IN THE AREA. FINALLY, SPELLING WASN'T ERNIE'S BEST SUBJECT AND HE FOUND THAT HIS CROSSING OF THE T WAS MORE LIKE A MATHEMATICAL PLUS SIGN AND, INSTEAD OF CARGO SHIPS, HE WAS UP AGAINST MUCH HEAVIER FIRE POWER.
