Show 2. I APPLIED FOR ADMISSION TO STANFORD AS A FRESHMAN MAJORING IN ENGINEERING. THE DAY I ENROLLED I SWITCHED TO PRE-LEGAL. AT THE END OF MY FRESHMAN YEAR I BECAME AN ENGLISH MAJOR. AT THE OUTSET OF MY JUNIOR YEAR I WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT OF MY FRATERNITY HOUSE, AND I CONCEIVED AND EXECUTED A PLAN TO GET SUMMER JOBS FOR THE NEEDY AND DESERVING BROTHERS BY WORKING WITH OUR FRATERNITY ALUMNI. AMONG THESE WAS ALFRED EAMES, SR., PRODUCTION VICE PRESIDENT OF CALIFORNIA PACKING CORPORATION - NOW DEL MONTE FOODS - AND FATHER OF DEL MONTE'S CURRENT CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER. HE WAS A GODSEND TO MY PROGRAM BECAUSE THE CANNERIES WERE NOT UNIONIZED, REQUIRED LARGE NUMBERS OF TEMPORARY SUMMER HELP, AND WERE DELIGHTED TO EMPLOY COLLEGE STUDENTS AT 40 AN HOUR. MR. EAMES TOOK AN INTEREST IN ME, PERSUADED ME TO BECOME A COMPANY TRAINEE FOR THE SUMMER OF 1935 CANNING CHERRIES AND APRICOTS, THEN TAKE THREE |
