Show 11. THE FIRST THING NEXT MORNING I REPORTED WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO BILL BATES WHO THEN DECIDED THAT PRECISELY THE RIGHT MOMENT HAD COME TO BREAK THE NEWS TO DAVIES THAT I WAS AT WORK IN HIS OFFICE. WHEN BATES RETURNED, I LEARNED I WAS NOT FIRED BUT HAD HAD MY SALARY RAISED. ON ONLY TWO OTHER OCCASIONS AND THEN ONLY BRIEFLY DID I HAVE ANY PERSONAL CONTACT WITH DAVIES. PART OF BILL BATES' PROTECTIVE COLORATION WAS NEVER TO ALLOW MY NAME OR INITIALS TO APPEAR ON ANY REPORT THAT WENT TO DAVIES, EVEN THOUGH FOR THE BETTER PART OF TWO YEARS VIRTUALLY EVERY SUCH REPORT WAS MY HANDIWORK. I CAN ONLY SUSPECT THAT DAVIES KNEW WHAT WAS GOING ON. HE WAS TOO SMART NOT TO KNOW BATES' LIMITATIONS BUT IT WAS ALSO INGRAINED IN HIS CHARACTER TO LOOK AFTER THOSE WHO COULD NOT LOOK AFTER THEMSELVES AND TO BE LOYAL TO THOSE WHO WERE LOYAL TO HIM. I DWELL ON THE RELATIONSHIP WITH RALPH DAVIES BECAUSE IT PLAYED |
