Show 6- I HAD BEEN SCHEDULED TO SPEAK THIS COMING MAY BUT LAST NOVEMBER BOB MCNAMARA, THE SCHEDULED SPEAKER, CANCELLED OUT ON THEM AT THE LAST MINUTE AND DEAN ARJAY MILLER SUGGESTED: "TRY ED LITTLEFIELD. HE'S USUALLY AVAILABLE ON SHORT NOTICE." ADMITTEDLY THAT WAS NOT A VERY FLATTERING COMMENT BUT IS THE KIND OF THING ONE LEARNS TO ACCEPT FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF YOUR EMPLOYER'S EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION COMMITTEE. WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO HEAR IS WHY I WAS ABLE TO RESPOND THEN ON SHORT NOTICE AND ONE REASON WHY I WAS PROMPT TO ACCEPT YOUR INVITATION TO BE WITH YOU THIS EVENING. PART OF THIS SPEECH WAS DELIVERED IN MARCH 1978 BEFORE THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF DIRECTORS AND IT SEEMS A SAFE ASSUMPTION THAT NONE OF YOU WAS THERE TO HEAR IT. MUCH OF THIS SPEECH WAS READIED TO PRESENT LAST OCTOBER WHEN I WAS THE "EXECUTIVE IN RESIDENCE" AT DENVER UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS. IT WENT UNDELIVERED THERE BECAUSE THE COMBINATION OF DU'S ADVANCED PUBLICITY AND MY DRAWING POWER PRODUCED AN AUDIENCE OF ONLY 12 |
