NAVY ERNIE AND I HAVE HAD THREE COMMON EMPLOYERS, SERVED ON THREE CORPORATE BOARDS TOGETHER, BEEN SRI DIRECTORS AND STANFORD TRUSTEES TOGETHER, AND EVEN BEEN ON A PRESIDENTIAL COMMISSION TOGETHER. IT WOULD BE FAIR TO SAY THAT WE HAVE HAD REMARKABLY PARALLEL CAREERS. THOSE WHO INSIST ON ACCURACY WILL BE QUICK TO POINT OUT THAT, THOUGH THE CAREERS MAY BE PARALLEL, ERNIE WAS EITHER A LAP AHEAD OF ME OR STILL AROUND AT THE FINISH. VIEWING HIM FROM THE BACKSIDE, THIS WAS HARD TO UNDERSTAND. HIS RECORD WILL NOT STAND DETAILED SCRUTINY. WHEN ERNIE WAS UP FOR CONSIDERATION AS DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, ROBERT MINGE BROWN WAS NOT THEN A STANFORD TRUSTEE AND DID NOT APPRECIATE THE SUBTLETIES OF THE APPROACH BEING MADE TO ERNIE. ERNIE WAS THE ONLY TRUSTEE IN STANFORD'S HISTORY WHERE AN A OUTSIDE CONSULTANT RAN A COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS AND INDICATED IN THIS |
